Music of the Mountains: Martin Gilmore Trio

Martin Gilmore grew up in a musical family His dad played in bluegrass bands, so he grew up going to festivals and gigs with his dad. He started playing the piano when he was six years old, and when he was fourteen, he fell in love with artists like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin and decided he wanted to pick up the guitar. He learned some basic chords and from there he was able to play a wide selection of folk songs he grew up listening to.

Over the years, Gilmore played in various bluegrass bands, and at one point, he felt he needed a group to allow him to perform the acoustic songs that he had written on his own. Thus, The Martin Gilmore Trio was born. In 2015, the group toured around Ireland, and they’ve since toured all over the United States. The trio consists of Gilmore on guitar and vocals (and occasionally octave mandolin), Nick Amodeo on mandolin, telecaster, and electric guitar, and Ian Haegele on bass and vocals.

Gilmore also cites Tim O’Brien, Hank Williams Sr., and Jimmy Rodgers as influences on his overall music taste. Roots and folk are big influences on the band, and Gilmore says that he likes writing songs with historical themes. He likes the Americana label because it encompasses a blending of many different styles of roots music.

He loves being able to perform on stage with people that he gets along with and he loves being able to bring an audience together to appreciate these older styles of music that still have relevance today.
